The HOLISTIC project was based in selected zones in Dundalk, (Ireland), Mödling (Austria) and Neuchâtel (Switzerland), where it aimed to stimulate a paradigm shift in the use of energy within these communities to more sustainable patterns. The project demonstrated how this transformation can be initiated in three typical communities by acting on every aspect of community life - housing, school, hospital, hotel, shops, leisure facilities and industry.
Project demonstration sites
Some highlights of the HOLISTIC project results at the three demonstration sites include:
- Installation of a photovoltaic plant on the roof of the new stadium La Maladière;
- Extension of a photovoltaic plant on the roof of the CPLN technical college with an increase in plant capacity by 11 kW;
- Installation of additional PV capacity at favourable locations (cumulated installed power of over 581 kW);
- Minergie certification of an educational building with a total of more than 120 rooms;
- Construction of 771 m2 building consisting of eight apartments;
- Retrofitting of a municipal building from the seventies, in addition to a 1570 m2 building by the lake;
- Retrofitting of the Neuchâtel University of Law, resulting in real energy savings of 125 MWh/yr or a 29% reduction in consumption against pre-retrofit data.
- Evaluation conducted of flow battery storage system at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) in conjunction with a large scale wind auto-producer;
- Study carried out into the energy production and transaction costs associated with energy supply contracting to design, build, operate and manage (DBFO) a biomass district heating scheme for three public sector organisations with locations in Dundalk;
- Measures were identified and undertaken to upgrade Louth County Hospital Campus and Oliver Plunkett nursing home. Meter data from a 6-month period indicate actual savings to be 719,598 kWh delivered energy and 214 tonnes of CO2 reduced;
- Launch of a Sustainable Energy Communities programme in Ireland.
- A new police department was constructed as good practice example for new public eco-buildings;
- Construction of new commercial building with energy performance of a very low-energy house standard;
- Refurbishment of one public building (Kindergarten Eisentorgasse) and five private buildings;
- Simulation conducted of three Optimised Energy Management scenarios;
- Solar roof programme designed to promote the installation of 430kWp of PV and 2000 m² of sun collectors.
