Description

The "Porte Ouest" is a former wasteland on which a urban masterplan was proposed in September 2021. The document identified 5 different axes contributing to the development of employment in Charleroi Métropole, which are campuses, "Future District", "Phare Ouest", a urban harbour and a system of public spaces, culture and landscapes. 

Demo Site Expected Impact

The reconversion of this site is aimed at being examplary with a focus on energy efficiency, accompanied by an economic hub for clean technologies. 

Technologies

Buildings and energy

Two buildings from the industrial era will be completely renovated with deep consideration for the highest standards in terms of energy performance. 
Regarding the new buildings that will be constructed on the site, those will have to comply with the same standards.

Mobility & Transport

The project area is close to one of the metro lines, and a new stop will be created near to it. The new Bus Rapid Transit line will also serve the site. There are plans to extend the bus lines working hours. There are discussions about moving one train station to a more accessible zone, benefiting the PCED.

ICT

ICT actions are not planned yet. Nevertheless, sensors, digital and data platforms, digital twins, etc will be unavoidable. 

Citizen engagement

It is considered to engage citizen participation in the project. 

Positive (clean) energy district

All actions forseen on the site are meant to contribute to the creation of a PCED in Charleroi.
