The European Citizens’ Debate on Energy Efficiency

After three insightful weekends of deliberation over the course of three months, the European Citizens’ Panel on Energy Efficiency has concluded. The 150 randomly selected citizens of the Union who came together to discuss this pivotal topic agreed on thirteen concrete policy recommendations that were personally handed to the Commission’s Executive Vice-President, Maroš Šefčovič. The exchange came with a promise to follow up on the citizens’ vision for the fair and sustainable use of energy and ensure that their input will impact future legislative efforts within the EU.

Nevertheless, the process is far from over. Until the end of May, citizens across the EU still have the chance to make their voice heard on the topic of energy efficiency. They can do so via the dedicated Citizens’ Engagement Platform, the Commission’s new online space wherein policy ideas can be presented, endorsed and commented on by the wider public. The multilingual software at play allows every participant to submit their own suggestion and view those of others in any of the 24 official EU languages. Since the start of the Panel, hundreds of citizens have already engaged in the debate – and you can become one of them!

Much like the conclusions of the aforementioned Panel, the contributions on the Platform will also be taken into account by relevant Commission bodies in the preparation of new legal initiatives. In addition to Energy Efficiency, citizens can now participate in the recently launched debate on Tackling Hatred in Society.

Join the debate and take your seat at the table today!
