E-scooters are a rapidly growing urban transport trend, particularly in Europe, where they have attracted around 20 million users. This form of mobility is seen as a step towards more sustainable transport options, potentially reducing reliance on private cars. However, it remains uncertain whether e-scooters are replacing car travel or simply competing with walking and cycling. Cities are exploring different regulatory approaches, from bans to open market access.
A new Smart Cities Marketplace Focus group aims to study e-scooter usage patterns, user needs, and existing policies across Europe. The group will publish academic papers, reports, and host webinars to share findings. The Smart Cities Marketplace is currently selecting participants, including e-scooter users and urban mobility professionals, to join 12 meetings from September 2024 to October 2025. Please find more information on the Focus group here.
