Smart Cities Marketplace
Investing in a sustainable and green urban future

The Smart Cities Marketplace and Scalable Cities are separate initiatives of the European Commission. Both play an important role in accelerating the just and green transition of European cities. They improve citizens’ quality of life, enhance the competitiveness of cities and industry, and help achieve European energy and climate targets across urban sectors like transport, mobility, logistics, built environment, energy infrastructures, urban data, digital assets, environment, citizen engagement and urban governance.

Smart Cities Marketplace

The Smart Cities Marketplace aims to ENGAGE cities and towns of all sizes to deliver more sustainable urban environments and offers all the information needed to EXPLORE solutions, SHAPE sustainable urban projects, and successfully close a DEAL for financing them. It offers a complete catalogue of support such as calls for free technical assistance, 1-to-1-consultancy services for city-led consortia close to the financing stage, financing masterclasses and fine-tuned assistance/matchmaking for the financing of sustainable urban projects.

Solution Booklet District Heating and Cooling

Half of the energy consumed in Europe is used for heating and cooling, and 75% of this energy is still coming from fossil fuels. Additionally, much of this energy is wasted due to inefficiencies in the heating and cooling systems. State-of-the-art, sustainable district heating and cooling systems offer a unique opportunity to make significant contributions to decarbonise EU cities through the efficient distribution of heat and cold from renewable energy sources.

District heating networks (initially centralised heat production, delivered through distribution networks) have been present in cities...
