Since October 2017, the project “Sustainable Urban Mobility and Commuting in Baltic Cities”, or SUMBA, has focused on how to achieve a more attractive and environmentally friendly commuting system in cities in the Baltic Sea Region. Now, after three years, the project is ready to share the tools and guidance documents developed and tested in the project’s pilot regions with a wider audience at its final event.
The event is hosted by the Baltic Environmental Forum Germany on behalf of the Borough of Altona (Hamburg), the project lead partner. Due to the COVID-19 the event will be held digitally via Zoom and will take place on March 24, 2021 9:30 - 12:30 Central European Time.
During the event, the main results from pilot cities will be presented as well as innovative tools such as the Intermodalyzer index and much more. The event concludes with a panel discu ssion where we will discuss the question of commuting and intermodality in light of the project results and current developments.
In the past three years SUMBA has developed and tested tools (e.g. commuting master plan template) that help urban and transport planners to assess, plan, and integrate intermodal mobility solutions into transport plans and policies of their cities and municipalities. The 10 pilot regions have analysed their situation with the Intermodalyzer index and the SWOT analysis, collected data and chosen suitable tools to plan or model their transport system. Based on the finding of these activities, commuting master plans and accompanying action plans have been developed in the pilot regions in a participatory way.
The project is led by City of Hamburg, Borough of Altona in cooperation with German Aerospace Center, Baltic Environmental Forum Estonia, City of Tallinn, The Union of Harju County Municipalities, City of Tartu, Baltic Environmental Forum Latvia, City of Riga, City of Växjö, Šiauliai City Municipality, Olsztyn Municipality and the Earth and People Foundation. The project is financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the INTERREG Baltic Sea Region programme.
