The Smart Cities Marketplace has published a new policy paper titled “Looking at Energy Communities through a Local Authority Lens: Perceptions, Experiences, and Needs.” This comprehensive study is based on interviews with 44 local authorities across Europe, providing a deep dive into their views on energy communities.
The findings reveal a limited understanding of the definitions of citizen energy communities and renewable energy communities among local authorities. Additionally, there are contradictions in these energy communities' perceived positive and negative impacts on municipalities and other stakeholders. Despite these challenges, there is a strong interest in developing community projects, whether they are seen as local renewable energy initiatives or true energy community projects.
Importantly, the study highlights a willingness among local authorities to support both emerging and existing citizen projects. This support is crucial for achieving local energy and climate targets.
