The Smart Cities Marketplace webinar titled "AI in the Energy Sector: Transforming Smart Cities and Power Systems" focused on the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in reshaping the landscape of smart cities, power systems, and mobility. The event aimed to provide participants with insights into the vast potential and complexities of AI deployment in the energy sector at the city level. It also showed how the Smart Cities Marketplace can provide tailored support to accelerate the transition to climate neutrality in cities and consortia involving private actors and investors.  

Throughout the webinar, speakers highlighted innovative trends, strategic applications, concrete solutions, and challenges local authorities face in adopting AI technologies. Discussions revolved around responsible and people-centric digital transformation, emphasising sustainable growth in cities.

The event introduced several latest trends and examples of good practices from different parts of Europe and beyond across various sectors, including energy, mobility, and water and waste management. Examples ranged from AI forecasts optimising electricity generation to predictive maintenance in transportation infrastructure and waste management processes.

The discussion also addressed the main challenges in the adoption of AI-based applications, including technological, social, and regulatory hurdles. Topics such as technology and data reliability, skills gaps, and ethical concerns were explored, along with the difficulty of regulating interdependent infrastructures and data.
