From 27–29 May 2026, the Cities Mission Conference in Torino brought together city stakeholders, innovation actors and community representatives to exchange insights and strengthen collaboration around climate-neutral urban development. The event provided a valuable space to explore how local initiatives can be scaled up and how targeted support services can accelerate implementation on the ground.
A central theme throughout the discussions at the Smart Cities Marketplace stand was the growing momentum of energy communities at the local level. Participants highlighted their ambition to expand existing initiatives in the Turin area and explored pathways to scale them further, underlining the importance of practical support, financing opportunities and strong partnerships. Interest from philanthropic actors indicated a willingness to back projects that align with broader societal and environmental objectives, particularly in regions undergoing transition.
The role of innovation ecosystems and city-led collaboration also featured prominently. At the same time, there was a clear demand for cross-border exchange, with interest in connecting cities beyond national contexts and facilitating international collaboration.
Discussions on matchmaking services confirmed their value in connecting cities, solution providers and investors. The Smart Cities Marketplace approach, particularly its emphasis on reducing administrative barriers, working in local languages and maintaining a strong on-the-ground presence, was received positively.
