Alicante Local Energy Communities

With a vision to become a European reference of a green economy and a sustainable and resilient territory relying on unique local assets, Alicante has developed a two-part initiative to reduce emissions and promote energy efficiency, with wide-scale adoption in mind.

Assisting municipalities in creating Europe’s first Local Energy Communities and implementing Provincial Energy Saving Plans, the initiative involves providing citizens with more information regarding energy consumption, installing monitoring systems for thermal insulation, and introducing photovoltaic solar panels through collaboration with local councils. Enhancing the look of neglected spaces in the municipality, unused land and buildings will be repurposed for the placement of solar panels, with the remaining surrounding area transformed into basketball courts and playgrounds as new communal spaces for families.

Fostering a renewable and resilient energy ecosystem, this solution empowers local communities to generate, consume, and share renewable energy resources within the city. With the main collective focus being solidarity, Alicante aims to establish interconnected Local Energy Communities that enable efficient energy management, cost savings, and environmental benefits.

The expected impact includes increased production of energy from renewable sources, lower electricity bills for users, and the establishment of local energy communities as examples for others to follow.
